British novelist James Hilton wrote a book in 1933 on the Lost Horizon. In it he described a place, Shangri-la that was an ageless paradise in the Himalayas close to the Tibet-China border. It was a work of fiction, but people have nonetheless attempted to locate the place. It shows how obsessed people are indeed with the prospect of living forever.

Gerontologists are professionals who make it their business to paint bleak pictures of aging as an all downhill process with increasing loss of skills, functions, and quality of life. Because of this, many are able to look forward to a not so bleak period in which they are senior citizens. Ancient Egypt has some of the earliest records of life extension and anti aging pursuits. Much about religion was unearthed in the prehistoric pyramids that focused on afterlife. In addition, a lot of attention was given to herbs and remedies such as olive leaf that were believed to promote beauty and longevity.

Preventing death is an ideal that has gone on for ages, and the failures man has endured in this field have eclipsed all the successes found in science and technology over the centuries. For some reason, a lot of people just want to live on and on. And for some reason, they are unable to. Perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be. But they can slow down the aging process by doing certain things right – such as eating well and living well. You can slow down aging too if you know and do the right things.
