Inspection overdue at hotel with elevator fatality

Inspections were overdue at a San Antonio hotel where a housekeeper died after falling six stories down an elevator shaft.

Elevators at the Menger Hotel, which is also owned by 1859-Historic Hotels Ltd., were also behind schedule, said Susan Stanford, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The elevators passed the inspections, but the hotels’ owner could still be in violation of state regulations for failing to inspect them by the scheduled deadline, she said.

‘Data room’ keeps teachers, students focused on goals

Labeled magnets cling to walls from floor to ceiling, loaded with data about students – their past test scores, their likelihood of passing upcoming state exams, their tutoring plan.

[...] they can track their students’ progress, compare test results, spot problem areas and brainstorm ways to improve their lessons.

Students must pass state exams to graduate, and their scores determine how their schools are rated by state and federal education agencies.

Sharpstown, in the Houston Independent School District, landed in the hot seat in 2010 after two straight years of earning the state’s lowest rating, “academically unacceptable.”

Teachers also can check out which students may need more attention this year because they barely passed the state exams last year or are close to scoring at the higher “commended” level.

Brevard created a magnet for each student, and it shows the number of questions each scored above or below the passing rate.

Because schools are held accountable for how different subgroups of students perform, the labels include colored dots to indicate students’ race, family income level and other factors.

Robert Schaeffer, the public education director of the National Center for Fair & Open Testing, a critic of standardized testing, said studying data is important, but school officials can take it too far.

One arrested, 2 more sought in deadly robbery

A woman has been arrested and two other suspects, including a teenager, are wanted in the beating and stabbing death of a man during a home robbery in west Harris County on Thursday.

Deputies said Lopez’s wife returned home from work to find her husband dead and two of the couple’s three children tied up.

Lopez used to work construction, but had been out of work for several months and was staying home with the children while his wife worked at a health food takeout restaurant, Davis said.

Garza said she now intends to make sure her doors are locked and to be wary of what she thought was a safe neighborhood.

Longtime constable, citing his health, quits 2012 race

Abercia submitted a notarized letter to the county Democratic Party headquarters announcing his withdrawal on Tuesday, said the party’s primary director, Demetria Nelson-McNulty. Abercia’s announcement comes within two weeks of FBI agents serving a subpoena on his office and seizing a deputy’s personnel file. The Harris County Attorney’s Office also is investigating all eight county constable offices in a wide-ranging review focusing on charitable organizations run by constables and a program that allows neighborhood groups to hire constables for local security patrols. Precinct 3 Commissioner Steve Radack, who was a sergeant with the Houston Police Department when he met Abercia in 1978, praised the constable’s four decades of law enforcement service to the county. “Jack was viewed as a constable who was very cooperative and worked with other elected officials without any regard to political party or anything like that,” Radack said. Abercia added a patrol division, a bike patrol and expanded a unit that transports mentally ill patients to treatment centers during his tenure.

Attempts to save Sanderson depot fall short

SANDERSON – With Chinese crews laying track from the West and mostly Irish working from the East, the two rail gangs met about 50 miles east of here in 1883, with a silver spike marking completion of the California-to-Louisiana line.

Shortly afterward, Sanderson, about 280 miles west of San Antonio, was established as the switching point for Southern Pacific train crews working between Del Rio and El Paso.

About all that remains are the ruins of the once-magnificent depot with its 12-foot ceilings, where locals once dined with passengers.

No one faults the railroad, which about nine years ago was willing to give the depot to a local group that had secured a $500,000 grant to create a railroad museum.

[...] since fundraising efforts have fallen woefully short, Smith said the best the preservationists can hope for is to salvage some doors, windows and lumber from the wreckage to construct a smaller replica structure.

The plight of the Sanderson depot has come to the attention of Henry Bender, 74, of San Jose, Calif., who recently completed a book about Southern Pacific Railroad train stations.

Blain Chriesman, 52, the local school business manager and tax appraiser, echoed what’s probably the prevailing local sentiment in town.
